THE COLLEGIATE PROGRAMMES

These programmes are for people with existing broad and in-depth knowledge, who don't need 'another qualification' but who do want to share, collaborate, learn, progress and enhance their professional interactions and patient-care approaches.  The programmes are for experienced practitioners who want to go 'to the next level' in their practice.

Collegiate participants are typically those who have undertaken a range of self-learning, who have explored a range of diverse educational opportunities, may already have a qualification in the given topic, but who wish to continue to grow professionally.  Collegiate participants also typically want to 'give back', to perhaps mentor others, to undertake some form of leadership, or to help others develop and to support the wider profession.  The Collegiate programme is not about 'testing' and 'assessing', nor is it about hierarchy, or credentials to 'prove one person is better than, or has more skills than, or is more expert than, any of their colleagues.  The Collegiate programme is about forming a community of practice that is active, forward thinking, progressing, respectful and engaging.  It is about building professional confidence, about exploring interprofessional dialogue and to ultimately enhance others awareness of the osteopathic contribution, and to support participants so they can help others better understand the benefits and diverse outcomes that osteopathic patients regularly experience.  The Collegiate programme hopes to build expertise, leadership and a foundation upon which future members of the osteopathic profession can build and be supported by.

The Collegiate programme is an 9 month programme of preceptorship, exchange and support. There will be monthly meetings, case studies, discussions and collaborative projects and explorations, to enhance everyone's dynamics for patient care.  There will be fortnightly feedback sessions, and everyone is expected to provide fresh case students (3 per semester) each semester - there are 3 semesters in total. Participants will be expected to share patient cares from the outset, to identify their uncertainties, but also what they think they can contribute, and each will help each other, under the guidance / preceptorship (which is an enabling for of mentorship, going beyond 'tutoring').

Peer support and personal reflection 'assessments' are used, but these are essentially formative, as they are based on the 'assessment is for learning principle' - assessment is of no value unless it enhances learning.   Opportunities for observations in teaching clinics can be arranged, and participants are encouraged to observe others in practice and then to reflect on those learning experiences.  A portfolio of participatory reports, reflections and analyses will need to be submitted at the end f the programme, to illustrate enhanced practice perspectives and engagement.

Evidence informed practice is a key part of the discussion, but so is patient centred care as well as practitioner experience, intuition, personal practice experiences, and patient led learning.  Your CNMO staff preceptors are not your 'teachers' - they wont dictate how you can practice, but are there to help everyone in the group help each other reach a more in depth and broad understanding of what it is to help and engage with patients, what roles are necessary, what roles osteopaths can play, and what one's personal professional capabilities may be.

Places are limited, as small groups are more able to share together.  Collegiate participants will also have access to a range of CPD resources - to compare and contrast their current knowledge base, and to explore areas they are less familiar with, or where they need updating.  Collegiate members will also be expected to share their knowledge, and for this to be added (in some form) to the current knowledge base, so that subsequent intakes of Collegiate members gain from an every enlarging fountain of experience.  This programme will enable participants to apply for Fellowship of the College (please enquire for details).

If you wish to undertake this programme, please enquire to admin@cnmo.co.uk for further details.   The Collegiate programme is £1000 for the year and starts on 1 November 2020.  Currently the Women's Health Collegiate Programme is the only option.  Further programmes are anticipated in due course.
